So… to start; I absolutely LOOOOVE Christmas - love everything about it - love the decorations, the lights, the candles, the presents (buying for others I actually love the most!).
So when people complain you should not talk about Christmas in October yet… I am actually probably the person you find talking about it!
Not sure if I want to see the decorations pop up in stores in October... but talking about it, preparing for it; YES!
There’s a bit of a struggle though; it’s not winter.
See, I am originally not from New Zealand - and even though I will never move away or change New Zealand for anything in the world… I DO miss that it’s not WINTER when it’s Christmas.
There’s nothing quite like walking home at 6pm, when it is already close to dark, you’re warm in your winter jacket with big warm knitted shawl and you see all the Christmas lights on the streets, inside people’s houses, by their windows… You hear Christmas carols playing from the store’s speakers and the snow crisps under your feet - watch out! Icy patch..!
And then when you walk into a nice warm house, you can really enjoy a cup of hot chocolate (or Gluhwein for some) while you warm up in the coziest environment, lit up by Christmas lights and candles…
Look at the Christmas tree and all the presents already under it…! Which one will be yours?
Outside you see the snow and cold pass by while you sit, warm and watching your favourite family show.
Having a big family dinner - all dressed up (you AND table) with lots of warm food and company is the best too - sitting at the table inside - all together- makes it easier to connect and have real conversations - remember to avoid politics and religion!!
And yes… there is something to the classic wintery, Christmassy scenes you see in movies… I miss it!
But I have also discovered that my love for Christmas really lies within me and no Summer can stop that!
So we recreate as much as we can and the rest… well, it gets replaced with other awesome stuff, like BBQ’s with friends, hanging on the beach making sure you don’t get burnt, we’re still eating ‘til we no longer can but it’s just more cold foods like salads, fruit and iceblocks (nothing wrong with those!).
We have water fights to cool down and when we can, we jump in the pool to cool off some more…
You make sure you wear your jandals everywhere as otherwise you will burn your feet and you generally just wear summer gear…
It is SO amazing here, living in New Zealand, I love it
And I would still LOVE to have one more WINTER Christmas with snow and all….
Christmas isn’t really Christmas
