Do you currently enjoy a hobby or craft, or are you thinking of taking one up? If so, did you know that you might receive some very real health benefits if you do? If you find that an interesting concept, consider some exciting new research by neuroscientists, (whose field of expertise is the study of the nervous system). They hail knitting, for example, as “the new yoga”!

Knitting, in particular, has been singled out for attention, because it is said to help people suffering from such illnesses as arthritis, multiple sclerosis and even eating disorders! The reasons given are that it helps the brain to focus on a single task. This, in turn, helps to lessen symptoms of pain and can assist in keeping anxiety in check. One friend, who is an avid knitter, told me how she will knit when travelling by car. (Oh, I should clarify that – not when she’s driving, of course!!) Travelling makes her nervous, and so focusing on a pattern and the enjoyment of making something, helps her manage better. Taking up a hobby or craft needn’t be expensive and there are plenty of options to consider. (If you don’t know where to start, perhaps check out the Internet for ideas or ask friends what they like to do). You could also find out what groups there are in your area and how to join. Along with the benefits already mentioned, this social activity would afford opportunities to make new friends, provide motivation, and be a place to share ideas and enthusiasm. If you teach someone your skills – that’s enjoyable too. You might even make gifts for others – handmade gifts are often the most valued.
