life lessons

from a rock

As Easter approaches, we start thinking about chocolate bunnies, chocolate eggs, family gatherings, and of course, the great Easter egg hunt. But there has been a craze sweeping over New Zealand that provides children with similar enjoyment to the Easter hunt, but you can partake in it any time of the year. What kid does not like a good old fashioned treasure hunt? In fact, we had birthday parties themed around it when I was a kid (and I’m sure this still happens). Well enter the great rock hunt!

For those of you who live under a rock (bad pun intended) or who are not fortunate to live in a city where this has taken off, it is the idea that you paint up rocks write #citynamerocks on the back, seal them up so they don’t get damaged by rain/dew and hide them around the city in places where children would go (parks, lakes, walks). Most cities that have this have a Facebook page related to it so you can post photos of the rocks you find, ones you have painted, clues to where ones are hidden, where a stash will be dropped off etc. Kids just love seeing picture of others who have found

the rocks they painted.

Rock hunting has seen people become obsessed with painting up rocks, hiding rocks and finding rocks, and trust me, once you start, it is hard to stop!
