In this special edition of Our Voice the staff was obligated to celebrate the many women in our culture that represents Black History Month. February is the month set aside to learn, honor, and celebrate the achievements of all black men and women throughout history.
The story of Black History Month begins in 1915, half a century after the Thirteenth Amendment abolished slavery in the United States. That September, the Harvard-trained historian Carter G. Woodson and the prominent minister Jesse E. Moorland founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH), an organization dedicated to researching and promoting achievements by black Americans and other peoples of African descent. The event inspired schools and communities nationwide to organize local celebrations, establish history clubs and host performances and lectures. As we follow in that tradition, Our Voice dedicates this issue to Black History Month with a collection and celebration of black woman starting with our featured business owner and entrepreneur Shovana Williams.
Our content doesn’t end with our tribute to black woman but includes the spirit of Valentine’s Day ~ a festival of romantic love which is celebrated by many people. Our writers have collected various stories of how love created in a virtual world and then transferred itself into reality.
In our efforts to develop our editorial content to explore both the grid experience with our readers as well as our real life familiarities, we are confident that you will enjoy the stories, the spoken word, the recipes, and our self-help ideas in making your 2014 more enjoyable and stress free.
As you turn the pages of this edition, we hope that it brings you fun, is educational, thought provoking and moving as it was a delight gathering this information for you, our readers. As always, we welcome your comments.
