One of our most influential and important powers as citizens is exercising our right to vote . Having to read through the many pages of the ballot can seem like a school assignment . We don ’ t want to do it , but if we don ’ t , we have to live with the consequences which could mean a failed grade . On a ballot , if we don ’ t know what or who we are voting for , we will also have to live with the consequences . The American Association of State Colleges and Universities recommends these three guidelines to help you prepare to be a responsible voter : 1 . Use reliable sources . When you are researching candidates and issues use non-partisan resources . 2 . Be an active listener / researcher . When candidates are trying to persuade their audience , it is important to read between the lines to understand what they are really saying . Does the candidate address the issues and questions raised , and give a direct , informed answer or just say what they think you want to hear ? 3 . Understand that your vote matters . More and
8 more , these days , people feel that their vote will not make a difference . It is important to understand that the healthiest democracy is one where everyone participates . We the people still hold the power . It is up to us to be aware of campaign strategies and create change ; but it will only happen if we all play our part . This November , voters in Santa Clarita will have an opportunity to decide if the many tax increases on the ballot will deliver services that are worth the extra sales tax or rise in property taxes . This is a decision we all have to make on our own . Election Day is Tuesday , November 8 , 2016 — it ’ s time to get started researching and learning the facts .
