These statistics are frightening . It is a sad state of affairs . Nonetheless , I ’ m more encouraged to do what I can to help our children , all of our children , to read more . As parents , we have the power to boost our children ’ s learning potential simply by making books an integral part of their lives . I was raised by a single mom , who worked two jobs to make ends meet and many times the means didn ’ t meet . She always encouraged and demanded that I read . Being the youngest of five , I was often home alone and reading became my good friend . I learned to love the library because we couldn ’ t afford to buy books . Reading helped expand my imagination and I traveled around the world while sitting in my chair or lying on my bed . Plus , I was learning new things and that made me extremely happy . I have been an avid reader for many years and I truly believe my love for reading inspired my love for writing . Now writing is my career .

• Barnes and Noble , Summer Reading Triathlon , kids can earn a free book .
