GARY FRIEDMAN: 2018 MERIT AWARD
& THE BEST IN SHOW AWARD
In third grade I drew all the cartoon characters I could (Disney to Dennis the Menace). Alas, the newspapers of today
don't feature nearly the talent we saw "back in the day." Now, I realize the work, craftsmanship, and imagination
involved that went into those "simple" cartoons. The passion to sketch and draw never left me. I've been "chasing the
dragon " ever since, exploring charcoal, pen and ink, watercolor and oils.
Occasionally something flows out of my hand, seemingly effortless, a joy to behold. " I did that?!" Why can't I duplicate
that every time? I'm beginning to see the need to develop a routine of practice (just like athletes or musicians): exploring
mediums, creating shape and form and exploring color. Hopefully joy, satisfaction and wonder trump frustration and
discouragement.
Currently I am retired from teaching music at Arroyo Seco Jr. High (30+ years). My jazz group, the RGB Trio, is always
looking for work and interesting people to play for (very reasonable rates). I love traveling (always take sketchbook),
surfing and gourmet " eating". My son David is also a teacher (great to plan surf trips with). Because my job requires
intense people interaction, practicing music or working on art can be therapeutic. But the greatest joy is sharing with
others what you've discovered musically or artistically.
