HISPANIC
HERITAGE
In 1845 Texas, with its large Hispanic population, was
annexed into the United States. Then in 1848, as a result of
the Mexican-American War, most of the Southwest
Territories (including California, Nevada, Arizona and parts
of Wyoming, Colorado and New Mexico) was ceded to the
United States. Most of the Mexican people who lived in the
ceded territory remained and over time became Americans.
