November 17th, 2016: Honouring the Polytechnic School Rebellion
On November 17th, we organised a
school festival to honour the people
who were killed at the Polytechnic
School of Athens in 1973. The
theme was taken from the German
movie “Die Welle” (=”The Wave”).
The film is based on a real story
that took place in a school in Palo Alto, California,
in April 1967. Ron Jones, a professor, tries to
teach his students, through an experiment, what
autocracy is. The children are carried away and
things get out of control. The facts become a book
by the professor himself; a first TV movie follows
(in 1981) and then the German film “Die Welle” in
2008. The students of classes E1 and E2 made a
school performance out of the movie so as to
understand how fascism can enter a society
silently and insidiously, then gradually manipulate
and finally destroy it.
