“We started modestly, and
now have a very talented core
of keen young players,” he said.
“It began three years ago, and
now we have more than 20
playing every week and tons of
inquiries.”
One aim is to steer
promising youngsters towards
age-related tournaments,
although there is also
scope for local challenges.
Recently the youngsters from
Fulham took on the adults of
Hammersmith... and more than
held their own.
Two summer chess camps in
Fulham and Twickenham were
also very well-attended.

Chess Club is a
game-changer with
local young people

Junior Chess Club is
proving that while fads
such as Pokemon GO may
briefly excite, nothing beats the
mental stimulation of a game
that has enthralled civilisation
for 800 years.
Meeting on Tuesdays, 5.307pm, in Fulham, the group
boasts success stories such
as Xavier Cowan’s current
progress to the national
finals of the U11s UK Chess
Challenge – in the last stages
from a 60,000-strong pool.
Another local youngster
came third in the UK U9s,
underlining the club’s ability to
develop talent.
Paul McKeown, who runs
the club, told Our Patch that
youngsters of all abilities were
welcome, and that while it’s
aimed at seven to 16s, there
