A
uthentic French bakers
are proving a hit in
Hammersmith as a
family brings a
little taste of home
to King Street.
Alain Marache and his wife Keiko
run Patisserie Sainte-Anne, and in
just a few months they have created
quite a fan base.
The couple run the bakery with
their son Martin, daughter Agnes and
four other staff.
It is a happy return to the borough
for the couple who met in London
in 1985 while Keiko was visiting
from her native Japan and studying
English at Hammersmith College.
She and her children have become
experts in baking bread and other
treats after learning from Alain, the
fourth generation of bakers in his
family – and people can tell.
Keiko said: “People are really happy
we’re here and like that we’re bringing a
taste of France to Hammersmith. About
75 per cent of our customers are French.
“We find our bread is the most
popular with our English customers,
it can be hard to find a real French
baguette in London.”
The family had been running a larger
bakery in France with the same name
since 1992, but sold up and came back
to London last year.
It took about six months to
transform the former travel agents’
office and kit it out with top-of-therange equipment from across Europe
before the family could open in August.
The bakery has become a popular
lunchtime spot and has seating inside
as well as an outdoor patio area.
Keiko may have become a baker
by chance, having taken it up after
meeting Alain, but she says she has
no regrets and still enjoys the job
after all these years.
She said: “The baking, the contact
with the customers, making up their
orders, I like it all.”
