Winter Time In Aroostook County

by Central Aroostook Chamber of Commerce
As I am writing this article , it appears that this will be “ an old fashioned ” winter . There should be lots of opportunities to go snowshoeing , sliding , sledding , skiing and tubing in Central Aroostook County this winter . There isn ’ t anything better than skiing , snowshoeing or sledding in the bright sunlight of a winter day . Don ’ t forget your sunglasses and sun protection ! This can incorporate or be followed by a great meal at one of our many eateries offering homestyle cooking . If you are enjoying these activities on a weekend , many of our snowmobile clubs offer hot meals along the trails .
Big Rock Ski Area has opened a new 800 ft . long tubing park . The park is serviced by a handle tow , and the mountain has invested in nearly 100 new tubes . The new park will feature two very wide lanes with some rollers giving the riders the feel of a roller coaster . This sounds like a great activity for those of us who aren ’ t skiers and want to be in the same location as your skiing family and friends , or maybe this is a great break for your legs after a long period of skiing .
Nordic Heritage Center , on the Presque Isle / Fort Fairfield line , offers great cross-country ski trails . The groomed trails are world class and have hosted several World Cup events as well as hosting regional competitions regularly . The ungroomed trails may provide either more challenging skiing or the opportunity to tryout snowshoes . Full maps and details of the trails are available at : http :// nordicheritagecenter . org . There are warming huts along some of the trails . These trails are open from dawn to dusk each day . There is no fee to use this facility , which makes it a great space to spend some time recreating and then retire to a local restaurant and / or hotel for some food and relaxation after exercise and fresh air .
If you are lucky while you are out enjoying the fresh air and bright sky , you will see signs of wildlife along the way . If you happen to be in a larger open space , you may see the magical beauty of marks in the snow where a bird of prey tried to get a snack .
Squirrels and birds will keep you company in wooded areas , letting you know that they are playing and watching you !
There is always something new to experience in Central Aroostook County ! New accommodations , new restaurants , new recreation opportunities , but we always have the same slow pace , beautiful skies and friendly , helpful people .
