Our Maine Street's Aroostook Issue 29 : Summer 2016 | Page 75

There’s always lots to do in Central Arooostook, especially in the summer. Let’s Take a Drive to Aroostook County! That doesn’t mean you can stop at Benedicta and turn around! If you travel north on Route 95, you will enter Aroostook County at Benedicta, but that is just the tip of the iceberg. As beautiful as Mount Katahdin is, there is much more to see as you travel north on Route 1, Route 11 to Fort Kent or Route 95 to its end at the Canadian Border in Houlton. This interior route bridges Grand Falls Flowage at Princeton, the Meduxnekeag River in Houlton, the North Branch Meduxnekeag River in Monticello, and the Aroostook River in Presque Isle before following the Saint John River upstream from Van Buren to Fort Kent. From Madawaska to its “northern” terminus at the Clair – Fort Kent Bridge in Fort Kent, US 1 North actually travels geographically south. The route’s most northerly geographic point is at its intersection with the Edmundston–Madawaska Bridge in Madawaska, across the Saint John River from Edmundston, New Brunswick, Canada. Route 11 goes through Moro plantation located about 24 miles west of Houlton, and north of Patten. It shares the Townline Road with Hersey. The heavily wooded area supports hunting, guides, and hunting lodges. Katahdin and Bear Mountain Lodges are on the Aroostook Scenic Highway (Route 11), far removed from centers of population. Route 11 is known as the most likely road on which to see a moose! Unfortunately, our moose are all wild creatures and do not appear when we want them. Traveling all the roads in Aroostook County requires attention for deer, moose, raccoons and porcupine. There could be rabbits, fox, coyote and squirrels crossing the road at any time as well. The times that you need to be particularly attentive are dawn and dusk as these are the times when these critters like to travel most. These main routes are intersected by crossroads that take you through other scenic areas, to lakes and hills, fishing, hiking and relaxing is available all summer. There are even locations where your cell phones and other electronic devices won’t work! Sometimes we just stop in those areas for a real break from the constant activity of today’s world.
