As there are special accommodations being arranged for the athletes, there should be ample supply of accommodations for fans. While in the area take time to visit some of the many locations that exhibit art. Each month there are several businesses and galleries that participate in the First Friday Art Walk with new exhibits, refreshments, musical entertainment and an opportunity to meet artists. The hardiness of Aroostook County residents is evident in the fact that these First Friday events are year round. Weather has not been a factor in the 5 years since this event began, although we may take a break in January if New Year’s Eve is near the weekend. We are always looking for new and aspiring artists to exhibit during these events. There are amazing local artists who have exhibited and sold work each month. No matter what the season, local restaurant, hotel, cabin and B&B hosts are happy to welcome you and provide great meals. Staff in local restaurants is always willing to adapt the menu to serve your taste. Quoggy Jo in Presque Isle and Bigrock Mountain in Mars Hill offer alpine skiing for all ages. Later in winter there are sled dog races, ice fishing tournaments and more going on in Aroostook County. Don’t forget the Bluegrass Festival that is held in Presque Isle mid winter. The sounds of good bluegrass liven up some of the coldest days of the year! The Central Aroostook Chamber of Commerce has joined in an old tradition of vehicles joining a caravan through the North Maine Woods to guide people to Quebec City, Quebec for the world renowned Carnavel! The Caravan leaves Portage Lake the second weekend of February and travels over the company roads to the Quebec border. You are likely to see wildlife, off-road forestry trucks hauling huge loads and have time to enjoy the beauty of Northern Maine that is not available to most. More information on the 2016 Maine-Quebec Winter Carnival Caravan can be found on the associated facebook page or from the Central Aroostook Chamber of Commerce at [email protected] or (207) 764-6561. Aroostook County is the home of some great things to see, do and enjoy. Come visit any time of the year and the local residents will be happy to make you feel at home.
