processions . In most places , it is enough to gather around a table for a dinner , some wine and a game of cards or raf e ( by the way , there is no such thing as the " urn of fate " at Christmas ). Caroling is a tradition in some parts of Italy , certainly , especially in the north , and many people go to Mass at midnight on Christmas night in large and small cities ( and many do not ). But when it comes to music , nothing makes us think of Christmas in Italy as much as bagpipes , zampognari , who gather with costumes and sheepskins to sing in squares , streets and houses , especially in north , but also in Rome and the mountains of Abruzzo and Molise .

Epiphany
The long series of winter holidays ends in Italy with " Epiphany " , which calendar corresponds to " Epiphany " in our country , but religious has another meaning , namely that of the rst recognition of the divinity of Jesus . On this day is commemorated the solemn visit of the Magi Kings - the adoration of the Magi - who come with gifts to the holy baby .
In parallel with the religious holiday , a popular tradition developed , much loved and awaited especially by the little ones , was developed : " La Befana ". It is said that on the night of January 5 to 6 , a hunchbacked old woman with a big nose , badly dressed and poor , rides on a broom to the houses where there are children and leaves them gifts . To the good ones he puts toys and sweets in the carefully placed socks , while to those who did the naughty ones he leaves coals ( dark sweets ). This year took place in Fornovo , a town near Parma , the national assembly of the Befans and Befans ( cotoroants and " cotoronts ") . The numerous games , contests , musical performances , stalls with objects speci c to the event , as well as the demonstrations of craftsmen , craftsmen and artists also contributed to the creation of the festive atmosphere , colored by the costumes of those disguised in the nice character .

Palio
The Palio is the most important event in Siena , taking place on July 2 and August 16 every year . In the Palio , the various Sienese " contrade ", or areas in which the city is divided , challenge each other in a passionate horse race in the heart of the city in the Piazza del Campo . Originally , there were about fty-nine " Contrade "; now only seventeen remain , ten of which take part in the historical pageant and in the race at each Palio ( seven by right and three drawn by lots ). The 17 Contrade which still exist today are : the Eagle , Snail , Wave , Panther , Forest , Tortoise , Owl , Unicorn , Shell , Tower , Ram , Caterpillar , Dragon , Giraffe , Porcupine , She-Wolf and the Goose .
