FRANK SLIDE INTERPRETIVE CENTRE On April 29 , 1903 at 4:10 am , 82 million tonnes of limestone crashed down Turtle Mountain , burying part of the coal mining town of Frank and killing an estimated 90 people as they slept . The resulting rubble field remains largely untouched , spawning legends about what lies beneath . FORT WHOOP-UP NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE In the 1860s , American prospectors established a post at Fort Whoop-Up to trade whisky to the plains tribes in exchange for buffalo skins . Though the trade was extremely lucrative , tensions rose and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police assumed control of the fort . Now a historic and interpretive site , it still maintains trade with the Blackfoot tribes of Southern Alberta .
