This seven-week program gives students the opportunity to work in an active research laboratory under the guidance of a faculty mentor. SUMMER SCHOLARS Approximately two dozen students are chosen each year for a six-week program that prepares them for the admissions process and the rigors and rewards of medical school. Courses taught by members of our faculty cover topics such as basic sciences, research methods, clinical skills, and time management. And true to the approach of the Heritage College, the curriculum emphasizes case- based problem solving and small-group teamwork. To qualify, applicants must be from an underrepresented minority group or an educationally or economically disadvantaged background. POST-BACCALAUREATE PROGRAM This program is designed to give a select number of high- potential students on our wait list an opportunity to gain admission to the Heritage College. The program is focused on serving under- represented minority students, as well as students from Appalachian Ohio, by providing one academic year of upper-level and graduate- level coursework. Participants who maintain a 3.0 GPA will be admitted to the following year’s medical school class. PREMATRICULATION PROGRAM EARLY ASSURANCE PROGRAM Admitted first-year students from underrepresented backgrounds are invited to participate in this monthlong summer program, an accelerated introduction to the medical school experience. Faculty members teach courses in physiology, cell biology, immunology, and gross anatomy, as well as workshops on study strategies, time management, and financial aid. The Heritage College selects a limited number of outstanding Ohio high school seniors for this program, which enables enrollees to earn their undergraduate and Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degrees in as few as seven years. Students receive their undergraduate degree at Ohio University, or at partner schools Baldwin-Wallace University, John Carroll University, Ohio Dominican University, or Otterbein University. For enrollees, the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) requirement is waived, they are mentored by a current medical student, and they receive early exposure to the medical school experience. Students who have completed the Post-Baccalaureate Program are required to participate in this program. 29
