Let’ s start with the challenge. Honestly, it felt like I’ d landed in Birmingham. It’ s designed around cars, not people. I thought, how did you manage to export the worst bits of British urban planning to such a small place?!!
Then I visited Madrid and Barcelona— cities designed for walking and community spaces. Gibraltar has inherited some of the worst car-centric habits, but it doesn’ t have to stay that way.
The opportunity is that Gibraltar’ s small size is its superpower. If you want to activate 25 % of the population, which is all you need to do to create big changes— you probably already know who they are. Plus it would also be easy to reach the next 25 %. That’ s rare.
Perhaps creating a sustainability networking event in Gibraltar might be the only catalyst you need. If people working in this space regularly connect, you could spark real change. Start building that culture.
And yes— get rid of some roads while you’ re at it.; o) What advice do you have for readers just starting their carbon literacy journey?
Start by calculating your carbon footprint. You can’ t change what you don’ t understand. You might be focusing on the wrong things without even realising it. And— don’ t go it alone. Find a friend to do it with. Make it a challenge. Keep each other accountable.
Of course, I’ ll add a plug— come to one of our Carbon Literacy courses! We run them virtually and monthly, and there’ s one coming up in the new year, 7 th and 8 th January. We have a 94 % recommendation rate and people find the learning inspiring!

Sigo adelante. ¡ Probablemente gracias a la cafeína! Y porque creo en lo que hacemos. ¿ Qué es lo que más te llamó la atención de Gibraltar, en cuanto a retos y oportunidades?
Empecemos por los retos. Sinceramente, me sentí como si hubiera aterrizado en Birmingham. Está diseñada para los coches, no para las personas. Pensé: «¿ Cómo han conseguido exportar lo peor del urbanismo británico a un lugar tan pequeño?».
Luego visité Madrid y Barcelona, ciudades diseñadas para caminar y con espacios comunitarios. Gibraltar ha heredado algunos de los peores hábitos centrados en el coche, pero no tiene por qué seguir siendo así.
La oportunidad es que el pequeño tamaño de Gibraltar es su superpoder. Si quieres activar al 25 % de la población, probablemente ya sabes quiénes son. Y es probable que sepas cómo llegar al siguiente 25 %. Eso es poco habitual.
Quizás crear un evento de networking sobre sostenibilidad en Gibraltar sea el único catalizador que necesitas. Si las personas que trabajan en este ámbito se relacionan regularmente, podrías provocar un cambio real. Empieza a construir esa cultura.
Y sí, aprovecha para eliminar algunas carreteras.; o) ¿ Qué consejo darías a los lectores que acaban de iniciar su andadura en el mundo de la alfabetización sobre el carbono?
Empieza por calcular tu huella de carbono. No puedes cambiar lo que no entiendes. Es posible que te estés centrando en las cosas equivocadas sin darte cuenta. Y no lo hagas solo. Busca a un amigo con quien hacerlo. Conviértelo en un reto. Haced que cada uno rinda cuentas al otro.
