SOUTH AFRICA INVESTS IN RENE- WABLE ENERGY TO REDUCE COAL DEPENDENCE
South Africa has embarked on an ambitious plan to increase its investment in renewable energy to reduce its dependence on coal , which currently accounts for
around 80 % of its electricity generation . The shift is part of the country ' s efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality , especially in urban areas where pollution is high due to coal-fired power plants .
The South African government has recently approved several wind and solar power projects , which are expected to add more than 2,000 megawatts of renewable capacity to the country ' s energy system in the coming years . In addition , financial incentives and subsidies have been put in place to encourage private investment in the renewable energy sector , including the creation of more solar plants and wind farms in rural areas .
These efforts are part of South Africa ' s strategy to diversify its energy mix and meet its international commitments in the fight against climate change , such as those set out in the Paris Agreement . As the country moves towards a more sustainable future , these investments are also expected to drive economic growth and green job creation .
