GREAT GREEN WALL INITIATIVE MOVES FORWARD IN THE SAHEL
The Great Green Wall Initiative is a pan-African project that aims to combat desertification and mitigate the effects of climate change in the Sahel region , a vast semi-arid belt stretching across Africa from Senegal in the west to Djibouti in the east . This ambitious project , launched in 2007 by the African Union , aims to restore 100 million hectares of degraded land , improve food security , and provide employment for millions of people by 2030 .
In recent years , the project has made significant progress in several Sahelian countries . In Senegal , for example , more than 12 million trees have been planted , covering more than 30,000 hectares of land . These restored areas not only help to slow the southward expansion of the Sahara desert , but also create a more conducive environment for agriculture and livestock farming , which is vital for local communities whose livelihoods depend on these activities .
Despite these advances , the project faces a number of challenges . Political instability and armed conflicts
in some Sahelian countries have hindered the project ' s implementation in certain areas . In addition , funding remains a significant obstacle ; although billions of dollars have been committed by international agencies and governments , much of the funds pledged have not yet been disbursed .
