The Alameda Wildlife Conservation Park (AWCP)
can be found at the heart of Gibraltar, nestled within
the Gibraltar Botanic Gardens (GBG).
El Parque de Conservación de la Alameda (AWCP) se encuentra en el núcleo de Gibraltar,
cobijado en los impresionante Jardines Botánicos de Gibraltar (GBG).
A small but varied collection of animals, the original
species were rescued from ships passing
through the Straits of Gibraltar. Many are unwanted
exotic pets or endangered species on loan from
International zoos as part of European Breeding
programmes.
Since its conception, this one acre site has
always had a feeling of magic and tranquility, an
oasis from Gibraltar’s bustling city. The lush plant
life surrounds natural rock work enclosures depicting
natural habitats for the inhabitants.
The majority of the animals at the AWCP have
been the victims of neglect, stress or disturbance
at the hands of humans. The Animal Keepers at the
park strive to reverse this negativity and to create a
positive and nurturing environment in which these
animals can thrive. Animal welfare is top on the
AWCP’s list of priorities, and the list of priorities is
endless. From species conservation, conservation
education, community outreach sustainable action,
awareness raising events, fundraising, animal enrichment
and training, the list goes on. The small
team of just five strives to achieve the highest standards
in all these aspects.
In 2016 their efforts were rewarded as they
became accredited members of the British & Irish
Association of Zoos & Aquaria (BIAZA). Although
deemed more of a sanctuary, the AWCP saw huge
benefits to joining the zoo world. Zoos have had a
bad rap over the years, but things are changing, for
the better. Good zoos are centres of conservation
and education. They are the first contact with nature
for many. In larger cities they provide a much
needed escape from the modern world and a connection
with species many people would never see
up close, this connection has been proven to be key
in influencing a culture of care for conservation.

breeding, this is crucial to the survival of many

animales, cuyos ejemplares originales fueron rescatados
de barcos que atravesaban el Estrecho de
Gibraltar. Muchos de ellos son mascotas exóticas
no deseadas o especies en peligro de extinción procedentes
de zoos internacionales como parte de los
programas europeos de reproducción.
Desde que fuese concebido, esta superficie de un
acre ha transmitido una sensación de magia y tranquilidad.

La frondosa vegetación rodea los muros de roca
y retrata así un hábitat natural para los inquilinos
de este espacio. La mayor parte de los animales
que habitan el AWCP han sido víctimas de maltrato,
estrés o negligencia por parte de los humanos. Los
empleados del parque se esfuerzan en revertir esa
negatividad y crear un entorno positivo y acogedor.
El bienestar de los animales constituye una de las
prioridades para el AWCP dentro una lista que resulta
interminable y abarca desde la conservación
de especies a la educación para la conservación y
acciones sostenibles comunitarias hasta eventos
para fomentar la concienciación, recogida de fondos
y enriquecimiento y entrenamiento de animales. Un
equipo de apenas cinco personas se conjura para
conseguir los máximos logros y avances posibles en
cada una de estas áreas.
En 2016 sus esfuerzos obtuvieron recompensa al
convertirse en miembros oficiales de la Asociación
británica e irlandesa de zoos y Aquaria (BIAZA). Catalogado
más como un santuario que como un parque,
el AWCP ha disfrutado de grandes ventajas tras
unirse al mundo de los zoos. Los zoos han atravesado
una mala racha durante los últimos años, pero
la situación está cambiando para mejor. Los zoos de
calidad son centros de conservación y educacionales.
Para muchas personas, constituyen el primer
contacto con la naturaleza. En las grandes ciudades
proporcionan una muy necesaria vía de escape del
mundo moderno y una comunicación con especies
que, de no ser por estos espacios, muchas personas
