nating from several different ways of life, no matter
how Arabised they appear to be. One of them, wi-
thout a doubt, is the way they understand religion.
Obviously, they are now formally Muslim, but we
must not forget that in the past they were Christians
and that there were also important Jewish commu-
nities among them.
In the mountains of the Rif, they tell a story that
sums up a lot the idiosyncrasies of the Amazigh,
which means free people in their native tongue.
When the Arabs arrived in the region, they asked
to meet with the chiefs of the tribes to ask them to
convert to Islam. After the conclave, their answer
was unanimous: we have to consult our Kabyle,
think about it and we’ll give you an answer. The
Arabs are still waiting.
Obviously today the Berbers are formally Mus-
lim, but maintain characteristics of certain religious
practices, leaving an ancient mark on every facet of
their lives. Within Islam, the Amazighs practice a
religion called Sufism, also known as Islamic spiri-
tuality. It is a personal path with practices and rites
that focus on matters of the spirit, gnosis, asceti-

cism, metaphysics and purification of the soul as
well as in God’s relationship with the cosmos. On
a wider level, Sufism is also linked to spiritual and
military chivalry and veneration for saints, through
maraboutism.
The Rif is one of the areas in the world where
maraboutism manifests itself most prominently.
The tomb of the venerated Sufi saint, Moulay Ab-
dessalam, located between oaks and cork oaks, is
considered by the Sufis to be one of the great pi-
llars of Islam. Its mere presence gave the Akhmas
tribe, who inhabit the area, holy status. This inclu-
des the city of Chefchaouen which until relatively
recently, was forbidden to non-Muslims.
As well as Moulay, there are several dozen ma-
rabouts and sacred forests in which many of his
disciples and descendants are buried. Annually
there are pilgrimages and festivals organized by
Sufi brotherhoods or tariqas to pursue the purifica-
tion of the soul through recitation, the study of the
Qur’an and the teachings of Muhammad. But also

holy bearers for the holy gift, known as Baraka.

A nivel
