clean was just an hour, but that was more than enou-
gh time to make me realise just how much plastic
and other rubbish pollutes our beaches and waters.
We were asked to focus our efforts on small bits
of rubbish as they are usually missed during general
beach cleans. After scouring the rocks near the wa-
ter’s edge for just a few minutes, I was dumbfoun-
ded by the number of small pieces of plastic waste
I found.
When you looked hard enough, they were
everywhere. Plastic label tags, bottle tops, pieces
of torn plastic bags, broken up polystyrene, straws,
lollypop sticks.... the list goes on.
They are so easy to miss, but the environmental im-
pact they have on marine ecosystems is immeasura-
ble. Large pieces of plastic and microplastics can dis-
rupt natural marine carbon cycles and are consumed
by millions of marine creatures and birds every year.
When the hour was up, we gathered our buckets
together. There must have been at least 8 or 9 large
buckets overflowing with both large and small pie-
ces of litter, plus other items too large to fit into the
containers. All of that in just 60 minutes!

Estas acciones de limpieza, se realizan cada dos/
cuatro semanas, centrándose en una de las playas
de Gibraltar en cada ocasión. En tan solo una hora,
pude darme cuenta de cuánto plástico y restos de
basuras contaminan nuestras playas y aguas.
La organización nos pidió centrarnos en los restos
pequeños de residuos, que por lo general, no se re-
tiran en las limpiezas generales del litoral. Tras unos
minutos recorriendo las rocas al borde del agua, me
quedé atónita por la cantidad de pequeños trozos
de desechos plásticos que pude encontrar y retirar.
Cuando observas detenidamente, los ves por
todas partes. Etiquetas plásticas, tapones de bote-
llas, restos de bolsas de plásticos, trozos de cor-
chos blancos (poliestirenos), pajitas, palitos chupa
chups... una larga lista de deshechos.
Es muy sencillo pasarlos por alto pero, el im-
pacto ambiental que producen en los ecosistemas
marinos, es inconmensurable. Grandes fragmentos
de plásticos y microplásticos pueden alterar los ci-

Speaking to Lewis from the Nautilus Project, we
learned a bit more about Rosia Bay and why more
needs to be done to take care of it. It is of parti-
cular environmental importance, as it holds a small
ecosystem that offers sanctuary to several vulnera-
ble and endangered species.
Before the beach clean, I had no idea that two
vulnerable species of seahorse can be found here.
A small colony of short-snouted and long-snouted
seahorses have made the calm waters of the bay
their home, relying on the seagrass that grows here
for food and shelter. However, the seagrass is also
dwindling, putting the lives of these beautiful crea-
tures at risk.
The giant limpet, Patella ferruginea, can also be
found here. This aquatic snail is locally protected but
is declining rapidly in other areas of the Mediterra-
nean.
If you peer over the side of the dilapidated pier,
you can also see the striking orangey-yellow star
coral, Astroides Calycularis. These vibrant corals
are native to the Mediterranean but are also at
risk of extinction.

cubetas grandes que rebosaban basura de todos los
tamaños, a lo que sumar otros utensilios demasiado
grandes para poder depositarlo en los contenedores.
¡Todo en tan solo sesenta minutos!
Hablando con Lewis del Proyecto Nautilus, apren-
dimos un poco más sobre Rosia Bay y del por qué son
necesarios más cuidados en esta zona de especial
importancia ambiental. Esta playa, posee un peque-
ño ecosistema que ofrece refugio a varias especies
vulnerables y en peligro de extinción.
Antes de limpiar la playa, no tenía idea de que
dos indefensas especies de caballitos de mar, pue-
den encontrarse en este enclave. Una pequeña colo-
nia de caballitos de mar de hocico corto y hocico lar-
go, ha hecho de las tranquilas aguas de la bahía, su
hogar. Los animales, confían en las algas que crecen
aquí para alimentarse y refugiarse. Pero estas algas
