SEPTEMBER Collection “The flower of the month” Belladonna Lily Amaryllis belladonna Dr Keith Bensusan Director Gibraltar Botanic Gardens, The Alameda. The end of the summer and onset of the autumn produce beautiful displays of the pale pink South African Belladonna Lily Amaryllis belladonna in the Gibraltar Botanic Gardens. These bulbs begin to flower in late August and early September, peaking around the middle of September. They only produce foliage following the flowering period and this provides a lovely, dark green ground cover that compensates for the lack of flowers. The species is native to the Cape region of South Afri- ca and is one of the many members of the family Amaryllidaceae that flower during the autumn. It is grown widely in Mediterranean countries around the world, where it is a popular garden plant. Gibraltar’s weather is quite similar to that around the Cape and this produces good conditions in which to cultivate the species. The Belladonna Lily tends to flower in March in South Africa, which is the southern hemisphere equivalent of our September. Curiously, it usually only flowers well after fires in its native habitat, but thankfully this is not the case in gardens. Lilies that are grown at home indoors are commonly referred to as ‘Amaryllis’ but in fact belong to a related but different group, Hippeastrum, which are from tropical America. 13
