and feeds around 30 – 40 people each week, is just
one of the local farmers who is already seeing the
impact of the water shortage. “All the little farms
are giving up and the land is being turned into de-
sert. If you go downstream the river isn’t there an-
ymore. I have had to minimize my water usage by
using black plastic to retain moisture in the soil and
I’ve stopped growing ornamental plants to focus so-
lely on food crops. There are very few animal herders
left on this land either. When my neighbour Jorge
retires, there’ll be no one left.”
Rio Aguas, the last living river in the area, has
become an emblem of the ensuing ecocide and a
source of campaigning for local groups. Ecologists in

alimentado por el acuífero de Alto Aguas, se canali-
za por la montaña hacia cada casa de la localidad, a
través de una bomba de rampa; literalmente el latido
del corazón del pueblo. Sin esta fuente vital de agua,
Los Molinos y todo lo que representa dejaría de
existir. De hecho, el pueblo vecino de Pueblo Gochar
contaba con un centenar de residentes en 2001 y en
2016 sólo lo habitaban cuatro personas. Si el agota-
miento del acuífero no se detiene pronto, la gente de
Los Molinos y otras pedanías del área, se verán en
las mismas circunstancias. Jackie, que ha cultivado
orgánicamente en Almería durante los últimos vein-
te años y con su producción alimenta entre tres y

have made numerous requests to the Junta de An-
dalucía (Andalucia Council) for details on the number
and depth of the aquifer wells, and demanded imme-
diate action be taken to prevent further deterioration
of the water supply. They have been met with no res-
ponse. Most recently, Sunseed Desert Technology, in
collaboration with local organisations and activists,
have come together under Platform for the Defence
of the Aquifer of Rio Aguas, working alongside Live
Aquifers, to fight for the rights of the water supply.
In 2017, the case of El Rio Aguas was taken to the
International Tribunal for the Rights of Nature in
Geneva and Ecologists in Action filed a complaint
with the European Union against the Junta de An-
dalucía’s non-compliance with Community Environ-

mentales para centrarme únicamente en los cultivos
alimentarios. También quedan muy pocos pastores
de animales en esta tierra. Cuando mi vecino Jorge
se retire, no quedará nadie “.
Río Aguas -último río vivo en el área- se ha con-
vertido en insignia del ecocidio y en el punto de par-
