INTRODUCTION OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENT DETECTION AND ADVANCED STOP LINES ( ASL ’ S ) AT REGAL HOUSE INTERCHANGE
The Government of Gibraltar is proud to announce a significant upgrade to the traffic management system at the Regal House Interchange . From midnight on Thursday , August 31st , 2023 , the existing traffic lights on Queensway , at its junction with Europort Avenue and Reclamation Road , was replaced with a state-of-the-art intelligent traffic light system .
Over the past few weeks , meticulous efforts have been underway to install cutting-edge infrastructure in phases , ensuring minimal disruption to traffic flow .
The previous system , though advanced in its time , is being replaced with detectors employing artificial intelligence . These detectors will distinguish between motor vehicles and bicycles / PLET ' s , dynamically adjusting the traffic flow accordingly .
To enhance safety for cyclists and PLET users , low-level bicycle lights and Advanced Stop Lines will guide them through the junction , granting them a safe head start before vehicles proceed . During non-peak hours , the system will prioritize pedestrians and cyclists . Modern LED lamps and a backup power supply will reduce disruption during power outages . The system also features updated push buttons , catering to the visually impaired .
