liquid flowed down the slits , the women raised their voices higher and higher , reciting prayers in unison , imploring the Mother Goddess for protection for this soon-to-be-adult child .
When at last every last drop of the sacralized liquid was absorbed by the earth , food for new seeds , the women accompanied her to the water source so that she could immerse herself in it . With the Moon Goddess as a witness , she would emerge from the waters , transformed into a woman . From that moment on , a new life as an adult would begin . Gone were the games with her friends , the baths in the river , climbing trees , wanting to be the first to see Vega emerge at dusk in the dark sky . Now there would be new obligations , new duties ... but she already had her own plans .
Between 2015 and 2018 , on the occasion of the completion of my doctoral thesis , we visited on several occasions the shelters called Cueva del Obispo I and II . The reason was to carry out a series of studies , including astronomical observations during the solstices and equinoxes , since among its paintings there are solar figures , the main reason for my research .
The site is located in the Sequilla mountain range in the municipality of Los Barrios . These two shelters were first published by Abbé H . Breuil and M . C . Burkitt in 1929 .
Both cavities , separated by a large crevice that leads to an idyllic natural spring of water , have two mouths , each one open to the N and S respectively .
Regarding its dimensions , we can say that the monumentality of the rock and the shelters that were formed in it stand out . It is impressive to see this great stone mass that reminds us of a gigantic Paleolithic skull . If today we , humans of the 21st century , are dumbfounded by this formation , for them it would be inevitable not to interpret it as a sign from the spirits that governed their cosmovision , that this place should be sacralized . Possibly , this was one of the reasons or characteristics why some shelters were chosen to be painted and others were not .
Obispo I has four clearly defined paintings , two suns , a triangle and an almost imperceptible doe , the rest are just remains of what were once figures . On the sloping floor of the cave are found , engraved by man , a series of channels and bowls that probably fulfilled their function in rituals performed with nuevamente con el momento presente , bajó la vista y delante de sus pies , en el suelo inclinado , había surcos y pequeñas cazoletas grabadas . Vio como comenzaba a correr por ellos la rosada mezcla , la Sangre de la Diosa , como la llamaban , hasta llegar a una escorrentía que daba a un pequeño espejo de agua . Mientras el líquido descendía por las ranuras , las mujeres alzaban cada vez más sus voces , recitando al unísono oraciones , implorando a la Diosa Madre protección para esta niña , pronto adulta .
Cuando por fin hasta la última gota del líquido sacralizado fue absorbida por la tierra , alimento de nuevas semillas , las mujeres la acompañaron hasta la fuente de agua para que se sumergiese en ella . Con la Diosa Luna como testigo , surgiría de entre las aguas , convertida en mujer . Comenzaba a partir de ese momento una nueva vida como adulta , atrás quedaban los juegos con sus amigos , los baños en el río , trepar a los árboles , querer ser la primera en ver a Vega surgir al atardecer en el oscuro cielo . Ahora habría nuevas obligaciones , nuevos deberes … pero ella ya tenía sus propios planes .
Entre los años 2015 y 2018 , con motivo de la realización de mi tesis doctoral , visitamos en varias ocasiones los abrigos denominados Cueva del Obispo I y II . La razón era realizarle una serie de estudios , entre ellos observaciones astronómicas durante los solsticios y equinoccios , ya que entre sus pinturas se encuentran figuras solares , motivo principal de mi investigación .
El yacimiento se encuentra en la sierra Sequilla en el término municipal de Los Barrios . Estos dos abrigos fueron publicados por primera vez por el abate H . Breuil y M . C . Burkitt , en 1929 .
Ambas cavidades , separadas por una gran grieta que conduce hasta una idílica surgencia natural de agua , cuentan con dos bocas , cada una abierta hacia el N y S respectivamente .
En lo referente a sus dimensiones podemos decir que destaca la monumentalidad del peñón y los abrigos que en él se formaron . Impresiona ver esa gran masa pétrea que nos recuerda una gigantesca calavera paleolítica . Si hoy en día a nosotros , humanos del siglo XXI , nos deja boquiabiertos esa formación , para ellos sería inevitable no interpretar como una señal de los espíritus que regían su cosmovisión , que ese lugar debía ser sacralizado .
