The movement of travel and subsequent writing are rites of passage : one tries to reinterpret and reintegrate what one has seen in terms understandable to the community-usually the community of origin-for whom one is writing .
It always seems to me that I will be fine , or even better , where I am not . In purely empirical terms this statement is totally illogical , since we know where we are , but on many occasions , we do not know where we are going . This occurrence of being better off somewhere else necessarily implies movement if imagination is excluded as an exclusive , imperative tool .
This theme of moving is one that always entertains me . Even when one travels back home , while one is still in the mode of being a traveler , one sees home as a place to be visited , as just another place .
The metaphor of the journey is consistent for us at all times in every way , it is not a universal constant . Forced diaspora , to give a collective ecumenical example , implies movement of flight , of escape by rejection . Considerations of attraction , in this sense of travel are irrelevant .
