Of course , there are other drivers too . Timber , mining and other activity cause deforestation worldwide , but our food choices are driving the largest clearing of forests ever seen .
Tropical forests couldn ’ t be more important than right now . Limiting climate change to 1.5 º C warming will be impossible without them
[ 6 ], and yet their destruction is already contributing to global CO2 levels . Current deforestation is releasing more CO2 than the whole of the EU .[
7 ]
But we need tropical forests for so many more reasons . If we want to avoid future pandemics , we need to stop burning our forests . Deforestation has been linked to several diseases being spread from malaria
[ 8 ] to Ebola .[
9 ] A lot of research predicts that future deforestation will increase the likelihood of global pandemics ever further .[
10 ]
And this is without even mentioning tropical forest ’ s roles in weather systems , their importance for biodiversity . Did you know that 25 per cent of all medicines , and 70 per cent of all cancer drugs , have
been discovered in the rainforest ?
[ 11 ] Well , what ’ s the solution ?
‘ An area the size of Wales ’ is frequently used to
measure the rate of forest destruction . Through Size of Wales , we are turning that negative use of the country ’ s size on its head .
Size of Wales provides funding and expertise to local and indigenous communities in tropical regions to support them to secure and sustain their precious forests , grow more trees and establish sustainable livelihoods .
Through education , community engagement and advocacy we also raise awareness in Wales of the importance of tropical forests and trees in tackling climate change . We aim to inspire people to see that they can be part of the solution
We support businesses to consider their supply chains and are campaigning for changes to law in the UK that would require supplies of goods to address this deforestation . Size of Wales is developing a toolkit to help businesses evaluate their supply chain , as well as a Zero Deforestation Pledge . We also link businesses with experts .
And we are not alone in this , charities like WWF and RSPB are working hard to address these issues , including creating guides and approaches for consu-

Claro que existen más causantes de este fenómeno . La tala , minería y otras actividades deforestan a nivel global , pero la realidad es que nuestro consumo alimentario es el que está precipitando los volúmenes históricos que venimos viviendo . La importancia de las selvas tropicales es mayor que nunca . Limitar el cambio climático a un calentamiento de 1,5 º C resultaría del todo imposible sin las mismas
[ 6 ] y aun así su destrucción contribuye a los índices globales de CO2 . La deforestación actual emite más CO2 que la totalidad de la Unión Europea .
[ 7 ] Además , necesitamos de las selvas tropicales por muchos otros motivos . Si pretendemos evitar pandemias futuras debemos dejar de quemar nuestros bosques . La deforestación ha sido relacionada con el esparcimiento de numerosas enfermedades , desde la malaria
[ 8 ] al ébola
[ 9 ] . Varias investigaciones coinciden en predecir que más deforestación futura precipitaría una mayor probabilidad de sufrir pandemias a nivel global
[ 10 ]. Y todo esto sin mencionar siquiera el rol que desempeñan las selvas tropicales en los sistemas meteorológicos y lo fundamentales que resultan para la biodiversidad . ¿ Sabía el lector que el 25 por ciento de todas las medicinas y el 70 de los tratamientos contra el cáncer provienen de descubrimientos realizados en la selva tropical ?
[ 11 ] ¿ Cuál es la solución ?
La magnitud de la destrucción forestal suele compararse con la superficie total del País de Gales . A través de dicha analogía estamos dándole uso y significado negativo al tamaño de ese país .
La organización Size of Wales surte de fondos y experiencia en la materia a comunidades indígenas de regiones tropicales de cara a proteger y sostener sus valiosas selvas , plantar más árboles y establecer comunidades sostenibles .
