Every year , thousands of volunteers around the world take part in Clean Up the World Day , a global community-based effort that brings people together to take action to combat waste and plastic pollution in their local areas .
Despite the ongoing restrictions due to the pandemic , this year was no exception . Millions of people from over 100 countries took part , including right here in Gibraltar and in Spain .
Organised locally by the Environment Safety Group ( ESG ), local organisations together with teams of volunteers came together for the 16th consecutive year to help clean up 14 sites around the Rock , including green spaces , streets , beaches and abandoned areas . Coordinated teams of volunteer divers also tackled vulnerable underwater areas at Rosia Bay .
Across the border , regular OTWO collaborators Verdemar Ecologist in Action , together with the Gran Sur Commercial Centre organised a group of 60 volunteers to clean up the Poniente beach in La Linea . In Algeciras , another group of 50 volunteers cleaned up several different areas in and around the town .
By now , most of us are very much aware of the impact the amount of waste we produce has on the environment , yet the billions of tonnes of rubbish thrown away globally each year continues to grow , most of which can ’ t be or just isn ’ t recycled . And although awareness is spreading , littering and fly-tipping is still a huge problem .
Street litter and even landfill refuse travels , usually blown by the wind and ending up in natural areas affecting birds and other wildlife . The most affected area is our oceans , where at least 10 % of all our waste ends up , either via rivers , through drains , or directly from the shore .
So , on 19th September and for the second year in a row , OTWO joined the efforts and were charged with the task of cleaning up the small beach at Seven Sisters together with five other volunteers . Accessible only by boat , the nearly 200m long rocky strip of beach is located under Engineer Battery and Alexandra Battery , just a few minutes boat ride from Rosia Bay .
Seven Sisters is a popular dive spot , named after the rocky pinnacles protruding from the water around the small bay . Divers often come here to see an abundance of marine life and remnants of Gibraltar ’ s shipping history .
Cada año , miles de voluntarios de todo el mundo participan en el día Limpiar el Mundo , un esfuerzo conjunto entre comunidades que reúne a la ciudadanía para luchar contra la existencia de residuos y la basura plástica en sus zonas locales .
Pese a las restricciones decretadas a causa de la pandemia , el presente año no ha constituido una excepción . Participaron millones de personas en más de cien países , incluyendo Gibraltar y España .

Una serie de grupos coordinados de submarinistas se encargó de llevar a cabo labores de limpieza en zonas marinas vulnerables en Rosia Bay .
Al otro lado de la frontera , Verdemar Ecologistas en Acción , entidad que colabora habituañmente con OTWO , organizó junto al centro comercial linense Gran Sur un grupo de 60 voluntarios para limpiar la playa local de Poniente . En Algeciras otro grupo de 50 voluntarios se dedicó a diferentes zonas de la ciudad .
A estas alturas , la mayoría somos conscientes del impacto que la cantidad de residuos que producimos tiene sobre el medioambiente . Aun así , las miles de millones de toneladas de basura que tiramos cada año y a nivel global siguen aumentando , y la mayor parte de ese volumen no se recicla . Y aunque la concienciación medioambiental sigue creciendo , los vertidos , escombros y la basura en las calles siguen constituyendo un enorme problema .
A la basura callejera se añade el transporte de residuos a los vertederos , parte de los cuales son arrastrados por el viento a zonas naturales , perjudicando a los pájaros y otros animales . La parte más afectada corresponde a los océanos , a donde van a parar al menos un diez por ciento de nuestros residuos , bien a través de los ríos , los colectores o directamente de la orilla .
De modo que el 19 de septiembre , y por segundo año consecutivo , OTWO se sumó a la iniciativa y recibió el encargo de limpiar la playita de Seve Sisters con la ayuda de otros cinco voluntarios . Accesible sólo por barco , esta franja de playa rocosa de casi
