Communities have been challenged by the UN to solve the world ’ s toughest sustainability challenges by 2030 . Recognising that we all have a role to play in making a difference , the Office of the Commissioner for Sustainable Development and Future Generations launched the Gibraltar Sustainability Awards .
The awards recognise the efforts that seek to address sustainability in our community and beyond . Although often mistaken to be solely about environmental concerns , sustainability is centred upon quality of life issues that affect both people and our planet . An event night and an ‘ active ’ webpage ( www . futuregenerations . gi ) provide platforms for achieving these goals .
The award categories recognise different thematic or sector entry points . These are informed by the UN Sustainable Development Goals ( SDGs ) which include themes related to :
• Health and wellbeing .
• Biodiversity , climate , environment and nature protection .
• Socio-economic issues incl : alleviating poverty and hunger .
• Addressing gender and social inequalities .
• Circular economy , sustainable consumption .
• Just and inclusive institutions .
• Education , learning and partnerships . Prof Daniella Tilbury : Commissioner for Sustainable Development and Future Generations highlighted the significance of the Awards :
“ It is important to celebrate achievement but also to scale-up the adoption of sustainability . By entering the Awards , groups , organizations and individuals are showcasing their efforts but also encouraging others to engage with this important commitment ”.
Las Naciones Unidas han requerido a las comunidades del mundo que resuelvan los desafíos medioambientales más exigentes para el año 2030 . Admitiendo nuestra parte de responsabilidad , como comunidad , en el objetivo de marcar las diferencias , la Oficina del Comisionado para el Desarrollo Sostenible y las Generaciones Futuras lanzaron los Premios de Sostenibilidad de Gibraltar .
Los premios acreditan aquellos esfuerzos destinados a promover la sostenibilidad en nuestra comunidad y más allá . A menudo percibida de forma errónea como algo concerniente en exclusiva al medioambiente , la sostenibilidad se centra en realidad en cuestiones relativas a la calidad de vida que afectan tanto a las personas como a nuestro planeta . Una velada especial y una página web activa ( www . futuregenerations . gi ) constituyen las plataformas creadas para alcanzar los objetivos señalados .
Las categorías en las que se dividen estos premios rinden reconocimiento a diferentes ejes temáticos o sectoriales y se ajustan a los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible de la ONU como son :
• Salud y bienestar .
• Biodiversidad , clima , medioambiente y protección de la naturaleza .
• Cuestiones socio-económicas , incluyendo reducir la pobreza y el hambre .
• Abordar desigualdades de género y sociales .
• La economía circular , el consumo sostenible .
• Instituciones justas e inclusivas .
• Educación , aprendizaje y cooperación .
