South Africa has one of the most diverse floras out of any country in the world . Indeed , many of the more commonly used garden plants are from South Africa , particularly in regions of the world with warm , Mediterranean-type climates , because the southern Cape region has a climate that is very similar to ours here on the Rock . Thus , many of the plants that we commonly associate with horticulture in Gibraltar are actually South African in origin . Plants with root bulbs are particularly diverse in South Africa , and these too are popular in gardening . Many are exceptionally attractive . Quite a number of these flower in autumn , to coincide with the first rains . These include attractive and often unusual Haemanthus species . Although many of these have red flowers , the Elephant ’ s Tongue Haemanthus albiflos is an unusual plant with striking white flowers . The species ’ common name , Elephant ’ s Tongue , is derived from its foliage rather than its flowers , and indeed many species of Haemanthus have unusual and often impressive leaves . “ albiflos ” refers to its white flowers . This is a very hardy , drought-tolerant species with attractive flowers and foliage that will grow very well alongside succulent plants , including South African species .

De hecho , varias de las plantas de jardín más habituales provienen de allí , y , más concretamente en zonas cálidas , de climatología mediterránea , dado que la región del Cabo es muy similar en clima al Peñón . De ahí que muchas de las plantas que habitualmente asociamos a la horticultura local provengan originalmente de Sudáfrica .

Aunque muchas tienen flores rojas , la Lengua de elefante Haemanthus albiflos es una planta inusual con llamativas flores blancas . El nombre vulgar de la especie , Lengua de elefante , se debe más a su follaje que a sus flores , y otras varias especies Haemanthus presentan hojas poco habituales a menudo impresionantes . El término ‘ albiflos ’ se refiere a esas hojas blancas ya citadas . Es ésta una especie muy resistente , tolerante a la sequía , y caracterizada por sus atractivas flores y follaje que crecen bien junto a otras plantas entre las que se incluyen especies sudafricanas hermanas .
