possibility of renewal . Our castle in the air vanished at the same speed at which we built it . Life also throws cold water on you . What was made clear from this swing of emotions is that we were sure that it was time for a change of scenery and leave Seville . We had to be patient .
In 2002 we went to live in Hull , UK . It was there that Angel got a job as a teacher . I soon found work in sales for a fresh oriental food producer and we decided we needed to buy a house and put down roots . We brought our furniture from Spain and set about decorating the house to our taste , including a shiny new kitchen . Time went by , slowly but surely .
In September 2003 , a friend in Alájar informed us that the couple running the Posada would not renew the concession and that the application for the administrative concession was open . We drew up our business plan and decided to submit our application in person . Angel went on his October holiday and all we could do was cross our fingers that no one had submitted a better bid .
We had made the best offer and , coupled with my qualifications and previous hospitality experience , we were offered the concession . We couldn ' t believe it was all coming together as we dreamed it would ! We gave in our notice , put the house on the market and started planning the move . It looks like that old investment in patience was finally paying off .
In January 2004 we finally took possession of La Posada de Alájar , a 10-room hotel in the centre of the village . At first it was hard , we wanted to make our mark , to make it unique and more sustainable , but it was not ours to make all the changes we would have liked , nor was there outside space . Somehow , we knew that La Posada was not going to be the end of our story but just the beginning . So , we started looking for houses to buy in the midst of the economic boom and found the one on Colon 12 , which overlooked a large lot . It was ideal , on the edge of town with few neighbours , but only a couple of minutes ’ walk to the town square . We were convinced and the deal was sealed - we were congratulated in town before the ink was dry !
The house was a wreck . Turning it into the luxury , eco-friendly B & B we dreamed of was going to be a huge renovation project . It was going to take more patience . We got the backing of the banks thanks to trativa que el ayuntamiento renovaba cada 4 años . Ahí estaba nuestra oportunidad . Podríamos darle al lugar una nueva vida , sin el compromiso financiero de empezar desde cero .
Lamentablemente , solo eran rumores y la pareja se quedaba hasta el final de su contrato , con la posibilidad de renovarlo . Nuestro castillo en el aire se esfumó a la misma velocidad a la que lo construimos . La vida también te echa jarros de agua fría . Lo que sacamos en claro de este vaivén de emociones es que estábamos seguros que era hora de cambiar de aires y dejar Sevilla . Había que tener paciencia .
En el 2002 nos fuimos a vivir a Hull , en el Reino Unido . Allí fue donde Ángel consiguió trabajo de profesor . Pronto encontré trabajo como comercial para un productor de alimentos frescos orientales y decidimos que necesitábamos comprar una casa y echar raíces . Mudamos nuestros muebles desde España y nos pusimos a decorar la casa a nuestro gusto , incluyendo una cocina nueva y reluciente . El tiempo fue pasando , sin prisa , pero sin pausa .
En septiembre de 2003 , un amigo en Alájar nos informó que la pareja que dirigía la Posada no renovaría la concesión y que se abría el plazo de solicitudes para la concesión administrativa . Elaboramos nuestro plan de negocio y decidimos presentar nuestra solicitud en persona . Ángel fue en sus vacaciones de octubre y lo único que pudimos hacer fue cruzar los dedos para que nadie hubiera presentado una oferta mejor .
Habíamos hecho la mejor oferta y , junto con mi titulación y experiencia previa en hostelería , se nos ofreció la concesión . ¡ No podíamos creer que todo estuviera saliendo como lo soñábamos ! Renunciamos a nuestros trabajos , pusimos la casa en venta y comenzamos a planificar la mudanza . Parece que esa vieja inversión en paciencia finalmente estaba dando sus frutos .
En enero de 2004 tomamos por fin posesión de La Posada de Alájar , un hotel de 10 habitaciones en el centro del pueblo . Al principio fue duro , queríamos dejar nuestra marca , hacerlo único y más sostenible , pero no era nuestro para hacer todos los cambios que nos hubieran gustado , tampoco había espacio exterior . De alguna manera supimos que La Posada no iba a ser el final de nuestra historia sino el principio . Así que comenzamos a buscar casas para com-
