The first whale was spotted in 2017 by marine biologist Bruno Díaz from the Bottlenose Dolphin Research Institute ( BDRI ). The second in 2018 , then again in 2019 and then in 2020 , both whales returned at the same time .
Whaling was a centuries-old industry in Spain , with multiple whaling ports placed up and down the country ’ s coasts . In the 1970s , it is believed that an entire generation of Blue Whales was all but wiped out in the region . Whaling was finally banned in 1986 .
Some experts are optimistic that this is a sign of recovery , whilst others are concerned that climate change is driving the whales back to the area .
Marine Biologist Bruno Díaz from the BDRI said : “ In recent years it ’ s been discovered that the blue whale ’ s migration is driven by memory , not by environmental conditions . This year there hasn ’ t been a notable increase in plankton , but here they are . Experiences are retained in the collective memory and drive the species to return .”
While Alfredo López , a marine biologist from CEMMA has a different theory : “ I ’ m pessimistic because there ’ s a high possibility that climate change is having a major impact on the blue whale ’ s habitat .
He believes that as blue whales never venture south of the equator , their current presence in Galician waters is a sign that warming temperatures are pushing the line north and reducing blue whales ’ habitat .
BRITISH AIRWAYS OPERATES FIRST PASSENGER FLIGHT USING COOKING OIL
British Airways operated its first-ever passenger flight using sustainable fuel .
The fuel used on the 52-minute journey from London to Glasgow was partially made from recycled cooking oil . Together with the use of one of BA ’ s newest planes , electric airport vehicles and the best possible flight path , CO2 emissions were slashed by 62 % compared to similar journeys ten years ago .
BA said that it had also offset the remaining emissions to make the journey carbon neutral .
The new plane , the Airbus A320neo , is BA ’ s most fuel-efficient short-haul model . Air traffic control also ensured the flights ’ ascent and descent had no hold-ups to maximise efficiency .
The demonstration was intended to show the progress made by the aviation industry ahead of COP26 . However , some critics pointed out that the perfect flight conditions and the planning that went into ensuring maximum reductions in emissions are not
