Why do Andalusian forests burn ? This could be the million-dollar question , the answer to which should be the beginning of the end of one of the most serious environmental problems that Andalusia faces every year . However , this is not the case . We know all too well why our forests are burned and we have known it for a long time . But , in spite of this , year after year , this nightmare does not disappear , but becomes stronger , threatening the populations of rural localities , taking a high economic and environmental toll and , sometimes , even human lives .
It is well known that the vast majority of fires have their origin in human factors . Whether negligence or criminal intent , more than 90 % of fires respond to this scheme and there is much work to be done in terms of rapid detection of outbreaks , research , development and application of new technologies . However , the causes that fuel fires and make them practically unstoppable are very varied . Some of them are beyond our direct control , as is the case with climate change , which directly leads to longer summers and increasingly frequent and long-lasting drought cycles . Some social dynamics , such as the abandonment and depopulation of rural areas , are also beyond our control , as they have a direct impact on the generation of greater quantities of plant fuel and on the increase in its caloric power during a fire .
However , we cannot be defeatist . Yes , there is much more to be done in terms of prevention and extinction to put an end to this problem . But , not only is no action being taken , but during the last few years we have been making great strides in the wrong direction , to the point of heading for a real catastrophe in the medium term if the appropriate measures are not taken now .
Everyone agrees that fires are extinguished in winter , it is almost a mantra . However , in the public forests , which is where the Junta de Andalucía has full powers , preventive work has been progressively reduced to become a shadow of what it was a short time ago . To give an iconic example , the pinsapar de Grazalema has gone for more than seven years without maintenance work on the firebreak areas that surround it . And we are talking about one of the most important forest jewels of the Autonomous Community , let ' s imagine how the rest are ....

¿ Por qué arden los montes andaluces ? Esta podría ser la pregunta del millón , cuya contestación debería ser el principio del fin de uno de los problemas ambientales más graves a los que Andalucía se enfrenta cada año . Sin embargo , no es así . Sabemos de sobra por qué se queman nuestros montes y lo sabemos desde hace mucho . Pero , a pesar de ello , año tras año , esta pesadilla no desaparece , sino que adquiere más fuerza , amenazando a las poblaciones de localidades rurales , cobrándose un alto precio económico y ambiental y , a veces , incluso vidas humanas .
Es de sobra conocido que la inmensa mayoría de los fuegos tienen su origen en factores humanos . Ya sean negligencias o con intencionalidad criminal , más del 90 % de los incendios responden a este esquema y ahí hay mucho que trabajar en cuanto a detección rápida de conatos , investigación , desarrollo y aplicación de nuevas tecnologías . Sin embargo , las causas que avivan los fuegos y los hacen prácticamente imparables son muy variopintas . Algunas de ellas se escapan a nuestro control directo , como sucede con el cambio climático que trae como consecuencia directa el alargamiento de los veranos y ciclos de sequía cada vez más frecuentes y duraderos . Tampoco son muy controlables algunas dinámicas sociales como el abandono y el despoblamiento del medio rural , al incidir de manera directa en la generación de mayores cantidades de combustible vegetal y en el aumento de su poder calórico durante un incendio .
Sin embargo , no podemos ser derrotistas . Sí que hay mucho más que hacer desde el lado de la prevención y la extinción para acabar con este problema . Pero , no sólo no se está actuando , sino que durante los últimos años estamos dando grandes pasos apuntando a la dirección equivocada , hasta el punto de dirigirnos a una verdadera catástrofe a medio plazo si no se toman las medidas oportunas desde ahora mismo .
Todo el mundo conviene en afirmar que los incendios se apagan en invierno , es ya casi un mantra . Sin embargo , en los montes públicos , que es donde la Junta de Andalucía tiene competencias plenas , los trabajos preventivos se han ido reduciendo progresivamente hasta convertirse en una sombra de lo que fueron poco tiempo atrás .
