Nevertheless , by 1am the area of Middle Hill was reported to be under control , but there was still danger to the east side . A fire crew was standing by at the City Council compound above Catalan Bay , where large fuel depots were located . Aided by strong westerly winds , pockets of fire crept down the east side slopes . The fear was that a sudden burst of flame could bring a shower of sparks onto this dangerous area , where copious quantities of fuel where stored . Luckily , this did not materialise .
Firefighters and volunteers had had a long exhausting fight from sunset till the early hours of the morning . It was not until about 4 am that things began to ease . The fire had been extinguished but there remained the danger of glowing embers scattered around the hills that could easily flare up . The area was not declared safe until 4pm the following day , at which time all men and appliances were stood down and removed from the scene . Skeleton equipment was left in place in case of emergency .
Miraculously , there were no casualties , and no damage to property . Only patches of dry vegetation , a few calcinated trees , scrub , and bushes were affected . The titanic efforts of the firefighters and volunteers brought the incident under control . They had extinguished a wildfire that could easily have engulfed and destroyed the entire Upper Rock area . However , this did not end the operation . A mammoth clean-up task followed . The Upper Rock areas affected by the fire required immediate attention and cleaning . So did the firefighting vehicles and equipment used in the operation .
The official report of the incident was presented in a meeting of the Gibraltar City Council held on the 14th of September 1967 . The verdict as to the cause of the fire was given as unknown .

Milagrosamente , no hubo víctimas ni daños materiales . Sólo se vieron afectados parches de vegetación seca , algunos árboles calcinados , matorrales y arbustos . Los titánicos esfuerzos de los bomberos y voluntarios pusieron el incidente bajo control . Habían extinguido un incendio forestal que fácilmente podría haber engullido y destruido toda la zona de Upper Rock . Sin embargo , esto no puso fin a la operación . Siguió una gigantesca tarea de limpieza . Las zonas de Upper Rock afectadas por el incendio requerían atención y limpieza inmediatas . Lo mismo ocurrió con los vehículos y equipos de bomberos utilizados en la operación .
