The garden is the heart ( kokoro ) of the house , around it the two-story building , made entirely of wood with sliding doors of washi paper . The rooms are secluded and the height and width of the doors speak of a small average size , even smaller than today , possibly the height of those who lived there two and a bit centuries ago when it was built . The bedrooms on the upper floor , clean , completely empty , the tatami floor of rice paddy straw and a hole in the wall where the futons are kept , only at night they are extended to sleep . In the bright living room overlooking the garden a small cornered altar ( tokonoma ) is the protagonist , evokes the perfect connection with nature and the natural evolution of things , it is also a symbol of hospitality .

A pasitos cortos Misuzu se dirige a la casa , y descalza sus zuecos de jardín antes de entrar . El uso de los zuecos es todo un ritual , un par de ellos aguardan en la puerta del baño y los usa cualquiera que quiera acceder a él . Otros cuantos pares los hay en el acceso a la cocina . Por el resto de la casa se camina con los pies desnudos sobre un suelo de madera inmaculado y crujiente .
El jardín es el corazón ( kokoro ) de la casa , en torno a él el edificio de dos plantas , fabricado completamente en madera con puertas correderas de papel washi . Las estancias son recogidas y la altura y anchura de las puertas hablan de una talla media menuda , incluso más pequeña que la actual , posiblemente la estatura de los que la habitaron hace dos siglos y pico cuando fue construida . Los dormitorios en la planta de arriba , limpios , completamente vacíos , el suelo de tatami de paja de arrozal y un hueco en la pared donde se guardan los futones que sólo a la noche se extienden para dor-
