the fir tree forests, is used solely for restoration,
conservation, and studies that do not alter the natu-
ral environment. And finally, the Natural Resources
Management area which comprises the rest of the
territory, designated for conservation and socioeco-
nomic development activities.
The inner area of the Park is home to around
25,000 inhabitants, distributed throughout six rural
communes within the province of Chefchaouen and
three other rural communes belonging to the Te-
tuan province. The Jebalas, literally meaning “the
people of the mountains”, are clearly distinguished
by their way of dress, their linguistic peculiarities,
their architectural techniques, and their agricultu-
ral practices, making the cultural and ethnographic
components of the protected space of Talassemtane
equally important and remarkable.
The Park has an extensive network of facilities
and trails for visitors and locals to get to know, use
and enjoy the natural space. Due to the number
of residents within the National Park, it is easy to
explore the area using forest tracks and trails that
connect some ‘douar’ (small villages) with others,
so there are a vast number of possible routes that
can be organised. Similarly, longer itineraries can
be planned by making use of the many existing rural
lodgings (gites), where as well as discovering this
exceptional natural environment, we are also able to
enjoy and truly immerse ourselves in Jebali culture.
The Park also offers many shorter trails that can
be completed in a single day and for those who have
not had special physical training. They are ideal for
those leaving their home or hotel in Chefchaouen in
the morning, spending a good part of the day out in
the country, to then return to their overnight lodgings
in the afternoon or evening. Most of the park’s gems
are easily accessible this way, so there is no excuse
to not see every last bit of it. However, it is always
advisable to be accompanied by expert mountain
guides who will assist through the activity and help
further understanding of the natural and cultural as-
pects of the region.

Nacional define tres zonas “ecológicas”. Por un lado,
la Zona Natural Protegida, que ocupa 1.034 ha de
pinsapar con cedros y su uso queda restringido a
investigaciones científicas y a tareas de regenera-
ción. El Santuario Natural Gestionado, que tiene una
extensión de 2.568 hectáreas y constituye la zona
tampón que rodea a los pinsapares, estando su uso
destinado a cuestiones de restauración, conserva-
ción, y estudios que no alteren el medio natural. Y,
por último, la zona de Gestión de los Recursos Natu-
rales, el resto del territorio, destinado a actividades
de conservación y desarrollo socioeconómico.
La zona interior del Parque acoge a unos 25.000
habitantes, distribuidos en seis comunas rurales de
la provincia de Chefchaouen y otras tres comunas
rurales pertenecientes a la de Tetuán. Los yebalas,
literalmente “la gente de las montañas”, se distin-
guen claramente por su forma de vestir, sus pecu-
liaridades lingüísticas, sus técnicas arquitectónicas
y sus prácticas agrarias, por lo que el componente
cultural y etnográfico de Talassemtane es igualmen-
te importante y reseñable en este espacio protegido.
El Parque cuenta con una extensa red de equipa-
mientos y senderos para el conocimiento, uso y disfrute
de la población y sus visitantes. Al existir una gran can-
tidad de residentes dentro del Parque Nacional, es fácil
recorrerlo usando las pistas forestales y los senderos
que unen unos aduares (aldeas) con otros, por lo que
las posibilidades de organización de rutas son enormes.
De igual modo, las itinerarios más largos pueden ser
planificados usando los numerosos alojamientos rura-
les (gîtes) existentes, en los que podemos disfrutar de
una verdadera inmersión en la cultura yebalí, además
de descubrir un entorno natural privilegiado.
El Parque también ofrece muchas posibilidades
para senderos más cortos pensados para un solo
día y personas sin una preparación física especial.
Son ideales para salir por la mañana de casa o de
un hotel en Chefchaouen, pasar buena parte del día
fuera en el campo y volver al lugar de pernocta por
la tarde o por la noche. La mayoría de las joyas del
parque son accesibles de este modo, de manera que
no hay excusas para no recorrerlo de punta a punta.
Eso sí, siempre es aconsejable estar acompañado de
expertos guías de montaña que facilitarán la realiza-
ción de la actividad y ayudarán a comprender in situ
la realidad natural y cultural de la región.
