after green areas and improving their local commu-
nity, were also purchased.
We have also developed a sustainable cate-
ring policy in collaboration with a local NGO -The
Sustainable Gibraltar: Food Group. The document,
which will be launched shortly, builds upon the la-
test research and best practice to inform respon-
sible catering practices and food choices. It seeks
to respond to a growing awareness of the envi-
ronmental and health impacts of our diets and the
need to procure and handle food responsibly whilst
understanding supply chains, carbon footprints,
and workers’ rights.
Last year we worked with the Department of Edu-
cation, school headteachers, educators, contractors,
project managers, and architects to embed sustai-
nability principles in the design and development of
the new school buildings in Gibraltar. These princi-
ples have been made visible via large sustainability
signs so that those visiting, working or learning at
the schools become aware of what sustainability
means in practice You may have seen these signs
if you visited Westside, Bayside or St Anne’s School
recently.
More recently, we have been encouraging Gibral-
tarians to take action to lower their carbon footprint
as part of this year’s EarthHour campaign. In partner-
ship with the Mayor’s Office and, given the COVID-19
context, we asked EarthHour supporters to stay
home and to record short videos on their mobile pho-
nes which end with ‘For us and future generations.
Gibraltar we can do it’. The videos were posted on
Twitter or Facebook and caught the imagination of
many across the community. We are hopeful that
this campaign has reminded many of the need to
reduce carbon intensive activities.
We have also been drafting the Sustainable De-
velopment and Future Generations Bill which is a
commitment of HMGOG for this political term. We
have assessed the learnings and experiences of
Commissioners from other States and Territories to
develop leading legislation that will embed in law,
our commitment to a sustainable future.
The COVID-19 situation encourages us to
look ahead. What are you most looking forward
to in the next 12 months?
I am most looking forward to The Gibraltar Sustai-

The Sustainable Gibraltar: Food Group.
