EXPANISION IN GIBRALTAR RECYCLING
The Government of Gibraltar has announced the expansion of its recycling programme with the introduction of organic waste collection and textile recycling bins . This initiative aligns with evolving European waste management practices and Gibraltar ’ s commitment to environmental sustainability .
A new organic waste collection service has been launched in key areas , including Casemates , the Public Market / Fish Market Lane , and Chatham Counterguard . The initiative will gradually extend across Gibraltar to encourage the proper disposal of biodegradable waste such as food scraps , coffee grounds , eggshells , and small garden waste . Organic waste recycling reduces landfill emissions and allows for composting , converting waste into nutrient-rich material .
In parallel , the government is installing new textile recycling bins across Gibraltar . The fashion industry is a major contributor to environmental pollution , and this initiative aims to minimize waste by repurposing discarded textiles . Reusable clothing will be distributed via the Senegal programme run by the Eco-park ( Gibraltar ), while non-reusable items will be converted into rags and cleaning cloths .
The Department of the Environment , in collaboration with the Environmental Agency , will visit businesses to provide guidance on the new recycling measures . Minister for the Environment , John Cortes , emphasized the importance of reducing waste and making the best use of
