We think the way-finder signs are a great idea and an economical way to encourage people to walk more . When will we begin to see these around Gibraltar ?
Unfortunately , we are on a tight budget due to funding restrictions , so it is difficult to say precisely . At the moment , our efforts are focused in creating some cycling infrastructure which is where Gibraltar is completely lacking . The way I see it , and I know this may sound selfish to some , we have an airport , a port , three small boats Marinas , a free bus service , pavements for pedestrians and roads for cars ; the only thing we do not have are bicycle lanes . I want to create transport equality for all , and personally , that means creating bicycle lanes as soon as possible and then we may move on to other pedestrian improvements such as way-finder signage . Even though the way-finder signs are in comparison cheaper than creating infrastructure , they still have considerable cost as they must be placed throughout Gibraltar . However , if possible , I hope to be able to have some way-finder signs installed within the next financial year as I believe they will encourage people to walk more .
The bicycle lanes do , however , include significant improvements for pedestrians too . So even though we may not be installing way-finder signs right now , we will improve the cycling and pedestrian offering together hence expanding and beautifying pedestrian areas too which will encourage people to do both . Are there any plans to increase the number of buses , particularly at peak times ?
We would like to , but we must be realistic . I wish our buses were full all day long because we could then justify employing more drivers and buying more buses . Mid-size buses are extremely expensive today , especially electric buses , which would be our logical choice . Gibraltar is unique in that we have some very narrow roads and tight corners , so we require buses that meet certain criteria . Buses need to be quite short , with short axle lengths to be able navigate tight corners , they must conform to weight restrictions , be accessible with sufficient seating capacity and be able to climb our hills adequately .
But increasing our bus fleet also means hiring more drivers , which is arguably the most expensive part of providing a bus service .
