The pop-ups are only in certain places like Bayside Road due to future construction planned in this area . We do not want to spend more than necessary now on permanent infrastructure to then have to repair it down the line as a result of construction although future developers would have to put right should they damage any of the planned work .
It is very normal to receive backlash once a project is completed , this happened during the pedestrianisation of Main Street . It is at this time that one needs to take a step back , listen to feedback and allow the dust to settle . More often than not , brave steps are slowly accepted once people have the time to see and appreciate its benefits . Will there be other pop-up infrastructure ?
The only definite pop-up for the immediate moment is Bayside Road , but , if need be , we will develop more pop-up lanes when we see these fit . Pop-up infrastructure can later become more permanent but is often cheaper to set up . Most of the permanent infrastructure uses planters and greenery to create a separate lane for bicycles away from cars and lasts much longer and it more aesthetically pleasing . What are the long-term benefits for the community , in your opinion , if the strategy is fully implemented , and how do you envision the Gibraltar of the future ?
To me , the Gibraltar of the future is one where people have the choice to move about as they wish and can adopt more sustainable transport methods . That our children can live in a city that is sensitive to the needs of the citizen and is healthier than what we have today . Likewise , if people still wish to drive , or must do so for whatever reason , they can also do so . Invariably , technologies are advancing , but Gibraltar prefers being forced to change rather than being cutting-edge . We love our cars and keep buying them , regardless of the environmental effects . We struggle to part with them at their end of life and they simple die on our streets , rusty and derelict . We will continue to buy diesel cars until we are forced to stop buying them or they are no longer manufactured .
