parking there and where the vehicles actually come from . As it turns out , very few belong to residents of Glacis or the surrounding area ; the majority are vehicles from other zones or foreign cars parking there to use the stadium and other facilities . But there are Pay and Display parking spaces and paid parking in front of and within the World Trade Centre and within Ocean Spa Plaza , so there is still plenty of parking available .
Following the announcement , we also allowed two weeks for people to officially comment on the plan and especially about the changes proposed to Bayside Road . Few official responses were received although much was said on social media channels .
At the end of the day , it is hard to convince certain people that we are making these changes to create transport equality in Gibraltar . When people come up to me and say , ‘ but not everyone can cycle ’, I tell them that at no point have I said not to use your car ; you can go ahead and use it . But when you see a bicycle in front of you on the road , that means there are fewer cars in front of you and hence less traffic . For those that do not like cyclists driving in front of them , the cycle lanes will mean that bicycles will give cars more space on the road as they are segregated from cars . Many think that plans to reduce traffic and congestion should include reducing cross-frontier traffic . A Park and Ride system has been mentioned several times over the past decade . Is this still on the agenda ?
Park and Ride is a great idea in many ways as long as it is planned properly . There are plans for the Eastside Reclamation area once the tunnel is completed . Planning conditions for that area should include plenty of parking . Foreign cars entering via the tunnel can then park and ride into town from there .
Originally it was intended that a Park-and-Ride be operated from Devil ’ s Tower Road Car-Park , but that would mean vehicles would have to drive further into Gibraltar and many may simply opt to continue that little bit further and park at Midtown . How will the Department of Transport realistically gauge public response to the temporary pop-ups , or are the plans now set in stone ?
