looking shop fronts , Main Street could look a lot better . Short-term thinking could damage our heritage and Gibraltar ’ s reputation as a tourist destination , so developers need to be deterred from thinking that they can buy a property , demolish it and rebuild . Tourists come to walk and shop in our city centre , if architecturally it changed any further , the appeal would be lost .
In the last fews years street art , which unfortunately got off to a controversial start , has sprung up around Gibraltar . There is nothing wrong with street art on the walls of bland modern buildings but not on historic buildings as in themselves they tell a story without the need for embellishment . Historic buildings need to be restored to show off their architectural features as they tend to be much more appealing than modern buildings . As such , the location of street art has to be carefully thought through and planned ensuring that historic buildings are not defaced .
The GHT , together with other NGOs , also wrote a report about the need to protect our views and vistas . Along the length of Devil ’ s Tower Road very large buildings continue to go up and they are screening the lower half of the North Face of the rock . Although the north face of the rock rises high above these buildings , the view from the Spanish coast is no longer the same . As an aside , a wind tunnel is being created along the entire length of this road . In strong easterlies walking along it will not be easy . Similarly as tourists walk along Waterport Road from the Cruise Terminal on the North Mole they look up and see the Rock and the Moorish Castle , iconic views that give a pleasing and lasting impression of Gibraltar . These views need to be protected . First impressions mean a lot .
As such , respect for our heritage is essential both for Gibraltarians as a distinct group of people and for our economic prosperity . After the pandemic tourists will return and they need to be offered a product that will make them want to revisit and even more importantly , spread a positive message about the place .

Del mismo modo , cuando los turistas caminan por Waterport Road desde la Cruise Terminal on the North Mole , miran hacia arriba y ven el Peñón y Moorish Castle , vistas icónicas que dan una impresión agradable y duradera de Gibraltar . Estas vistas deben ser protegidas . La primera impresión significa mucho .
Por ello , el respeto a nuestro patrimonio es esencial tanto para los gibraltareños como grupo de personas distintas como para nuestra prosperidad económica . Después de la pandemia , los turistas volverán y hay que ofrecerles un producto que les haga querer volver a visitarnos y , lo que es más importante , difundir un mensaje positivo sobre el lugar .
