Most standard definitions will state that heritage is what gives a place a unique sense of community identity. It refers to values, traditions, culture, artefacts, monuments, built and natural environments, which have been entrusted to us by previous generations to conserve or preserve. So heritage includes that which is tangible and intangible, ideas, recollections, memories- of songs, recipes, language and many other elements of who we are and how we identify ourselves-which are as important as historic buildings.
In essence, heritage is what identifies Gibraltarians as a distinct group of people and is what any nationalist should aim to protect and promote.
