Most standard definitions will state that heritage is what gives a place a unique sense of community identity . It refers to values , traditions , culture , artefacts , monuments , built and natural environments , which have been entrusted to us by previous generations to conserve or preserve . So heritage includes that which is tangible and intangible , ideas , recollections , memories - of songs , recipes , language and many other elements of who we are and how we identify ourselves -which are as important as historic buildings .
In essence , heritage is what identifies Gibraltarians as a distinct group of people and is what any nationalist should aim to protect and promote .
