A clear distinction has to be made between preservation and conservation . Preservation means keeping intact , free of damage , decay or change . There are monuments and artefacts that need to be protected in this way , however , for many buildings and structures conservation allows for change , permitting modern usage , as long as the original is respected .
Over the last 20 years there have been some key conservation projects locally . For instance , over time Kings Bastion has had a variety of uses , from being part of the military fortification to housing a power station and then to the Leisure Centre . It could never be demolished but now has a purposeful usage . Although I am concerned that in more recent years some changes to the original project has resulted in the addition of tented structures along the top which have caused localised damage to stonework and obstruction to the embrasures .
Similarly , bars , restaurants and clubs in Wellington Front and Chatham Counterguard have made good use of the spaces within our historic walls . The arched bricked ceilings have been exposed to great effect . Wellington Front has a very attractive walkway along the top which hopefully will in the future be continued north . We all look forward to being able to walk along the entire length of the walls . Likewise the University of Gibraltar buildings and the Gibraltar International Bank have been carefully repurposed .
Protecting our heritage is essential if tourism is to be promoted . We are well aware that economic activity from a wide variety of sources will need to develop post pandemic . In Gibraltar we are lucky to have a distinct physical and man-made environment to the hinterland . A geomorphological feature that millions want to visit but it is much more than just a block of jurassic limestone that stands out as a peninsula from the mainland . Making it special are the natural and man-made features both on and within it . As such , The Gibraltar Heritage Trust ( GHT ) has in the past few years written a number of reports highlighting specific areas of concern . One report dealt with our tourist product and the need to improve it . Essentially Gibraltar has a range of unique selling points which remain under utilised or unexploited .
For instance , on the Upper Rock the Skywalk and the Windsor Bridge are welcome new attractions gibraltareños como un grupo de personas distinto y es lo que cualquier nacionalista debería tratar de proteger y promover .
