OIL SPILL IN THE BAY OF GIBRALTAR
A small Liberian-flagged bulk carrier has been attributed to an oil spill in the Bay of Gibraltar on Friday 12th February .
Following the incident , the vessel alerted the Gibraltar Port Authority , confirming that the spill was caused by a faulty venting valve .
The slick has affected parts of the western shore around Westview Park and the rowing and bathing clubs . However , there have been some reports of oil from the spill travelling as far as Camp Bay .
Immediately after the spill was reported , the counter pollution plan was set in motion . This includes an investigation into the cause and a clean-up operation .
Algeciras was also alerted to the incident , and two Spanish vessels entered the area to help prevent the spill from spreading across the bay .
Local NGOs The Nautilus Project ( TNP ) and the Gibraltar Ornithological and Natural History Society ( GONHS ) warned of the severe long-term effects that spills can have on the marine environment , with the GONHS calling for a full public investigation into the incident .
TNP issued a statement expressing concern for the impact that oil leaks can have on endangered local dolphin populations and birdlife as well as the long-term effects on fish , shellfish , sponges and invertebrates as the oil mixes with the water column . They also added that as long as bunkering continues in the bay , events such as this will likely happen again .
