Last year, the RAW troop welcomed two new infants: Mowgli and Boots, which imposed parental responsibility onto some, but cunning opportunity to others. Alloparenting is common among Barbary macaques and is where the mother will often recruit a friend to help with parental care, and both males and females share the responsibility of raising an infant. However, there are also forms of non-consensual parenting where lower rank macaques may‘ steal’ babies to use as a shield or to improve relations with higher ranks.
Conflict between troops is uncommon on The Rock, although occasionally a brawl can break out if territorial boundaries are ignored and members from different troops end up in the same place at the same time. The best thing to do in this situation is to just walk away slowly, they are not looking to attack you. The optimal way to interact with the macaques in general is from a distance and do not touch or feed them. It is an illegal offence to do so under the nature protection act 1991. Not only is it illegal but also disturbs their natural behaviour( and diet), causes distress and this in turn negatively affects their health and long-term survival on The Rock. Needless to say, the offender also risks injury to themselves and imposes risk of disease transmission by touching the macaques. Appreciating their freedom even from a small distance and taking photos with a zoom is a much more considerate and fulfilling way to enjoy Europe’ s only non-captive monkeys, whilst encouraging their preservation for the experience of future visitors too.

It is funny that a population of monkeys who initially all look so similar can be so different. At first glance, they may seem a wild entropy strewn across grassy swathes of pallid rock, but upon closer inspection, there is a disturbing albeit enlightening reveal of their parallels with those of our own society. de acicalar a hembras de bajo rango, y puede probar suerte acicalando a un macho, pero a menudo se encuentra con el rechazo. Sin embargo, también existen formas de paternidad no consentida en las que los macacos de rango inferior pueden « robar » bebés para utilizarlos como escudo o para mejorar las relaciones con los de rango superior.
Los conflictos entre tropas son poco comunes en La Roca, aunque ocasionalmente puede estallar una reyerta si se ignoran los límites territoriales y miembros de diferentes tropas acaban en el mismo lugar al mismo tiempo. Lo mejor que puedes hacer en esta situación es alejarte lentamente, no buscan atacarte. La forma óptima de interactuar con los macacos en general es desde la distancia y no tocarlos ni darles de comer. La ley de protección de la naturaleza de 1991 prohíbe hacerlo. No sólo es ilegal, sino que además perturba su comportamiento natural( y su dieta), les causa angustia y esto, a su vez, afecta negativamente a su salud y a su supervivencia a largo plazo en La Roca. Ni que decir tiene que, al tocar a los macacos, el infractor también se arriesga a herirse a sí mismo y a contraer enfermedades. Apreciar su libertad, incluso desde una pequeña distancia, y tomar fotos con un zoom es una forma mucho más considerada y satisfactoria de disfrutar de los únicos monos no cautivos de Europa, al tiempo que se fomenta su conservación para la experiencia de futuros visitantes también.
