grooming rituals have bribed many of the troop’ s females into friendliness with him, to the point of him being able to receive grooms back on demand … a huge sign of political power.
Higher ranking males can‘ mount’ males of lower ranks to assert their dominance, whereas others may defend themselves from aggression by presenting their backside in truce. Although lacking in a visible tail, the Barbary macaques are no longer recognised as apes. Their ancestors had a tail made for climbing through jungle, but this lost its purpose in the woodland and rocky habitats of northern Africa. What is left, is called a vestigial tail which is only visible from newborn to about 2 years old.
Grooming is a major tactical currency deployed among barbary macaques for the trade of access to food and social acceptance. It reduces stress levels and keeps their fur clean. However, such physical contact can often require permission from the recipient first. The chattering of teeth is a friendly gesture of affiliation, or reassurance, that the performer’ s intentions are peaceful, and they mean no harm.
Unfortunately, privileges like grooming and access to food are very skewed between high and low rank macaques. Lower rank individuals are often found on the very outskirts of the troop as they risk conflict venturing towards the centre. Rather than teeth chattering, they may be more susceptible to the famous round-mouthed threat, which acts as a warning( please step back if a macaque pulls this face at you, as this means they are uncomfortable and feel threatened).
Max is an old macaque who has come from another troop and has spent months trying to fit in with the Royal Anglian Way troop but making very little progress. Migrating between troops is normal for male macaques, but for an outcast like Max, the centre of the troop is so far away that finding a home is almost impossible. He is only able to groom low rank females, and may try his luck grooming a male, but is often met with rejection. It is imperative his social standing must change to continue his livelihood and genetic legacy, but sadly it is probable that- for the rest of his lifetime- Max will almost never be groomed, never mate, and will be the last to access food and shelter.

A pesar del ceño fruncido que le caracteriza, sus meticulosos rituales de acicalamiento han sobornado a muchas de las hembras de la tropa para que se muestren amistosas con él, hasta el punto de que puede recibir mozos de cuadra a petición... una gran señal de poder político.
Los machos de mayor rango pueden « montar » a machos de menor rango para afirmar su dominio, mientras que otros pueden defenderse de las agresiones presentando su trasero en tregua. Aunque carecen de cola visible, los macacos de Berbería ya no se reconocen como simios. Sus antepasados tenían una cola para trepar por la selva, pero ésta perdió su utilidad en los hábitats boscosos y rocosos del norte de África. Lo que les queda se llama cola vestigial y sólo es visible desde recién nacidos hasta los dos años de edad.
El acicalamiento es una de las principales tácticas utilizadas por los macacos de Berbería para acceder a la comida y ser aceptados socialmente. Reduce los niveles de estrés y mantiene limpio el pelaje. Sin embargo, este contacto físico suele requerir el permiso previo del receptor. El castañeteo de dientes es un gesto amistoso de afiliación, o una garantía de que las intenciones del ejecutante son pacíficas y no pretenden hacer daño.
Por desgracia, los privilegios como el acicalamiento y el acceso a la comida están muy repartidos entre los macacos de alto y bajo rango. Los individuos de rango inferior suelen encontrarse en las afueras de la tropa, ya que corren el riesgo de entrar en conflicto si se aventuran hacia el centro. En lugar de castañear los dientes, pueden ser más susceptibles a la famosa amenaza de boca redonda, que actúa como advertencia( por favor, apártese si un macaco le pone esta cara, ya que significa que se siente incómodo y amenazado).
Max es un macaco viejo que ha venido de otra tropa y ha pasado meses intentando adaptarse a la tropa del Camino Real de Anglia, pero ha hecho muy pocos progresos. Migrar entre tropas es normal para los macacos macho, pero para un marginado como Max, el centro de la tropa está tan lejos que encontrar un hogar es casi imposible. Sólo es capaz
