In Spain , 80 % of the water is used for agriculture , however only 13 % of the total water distributed in Spain is reclaimed or reused water .
In our quest for sustainable living , can we now unlock the potential of technology and innovation to optimise water usage , minimise waste and enhance our Global Water Resilience ?
Well I have postive example for you , The Remarkable Transformation of the Seine River . Once declared biologically dead in the 1960s having bore witness to centuries of pollution . From the grim disposal of bodies of slaughtered protestants in the 16th Century , to the industrial revolutions ’ mass contamination . Paris is an ancient city which struggled with a sewage system dating back centuries , they have successfully retrofitted this historical infrastructure to meet modern demands that posed a formidable challenge .
Paris operates a 100 % combined sewage system , where rainwater and sewage flow through the same pipes before treatment . Even today , during heavy rainfall , Combined Sewage Overflows ( CSOs ) persistently discharge into the river . Yet , progress shines through : in 2022 , over 1.9 million cubic meters of wastewater overflowed into the Seine — remarkably , 90 % less than two decades ago . President Macron ’ s commitment to a clean river for the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympics marks a historic turning point .
But what does this mean for us beyond Parisian shores at home in Gibraltar ? After all we desalinate all our water and Aquagib does a good job of it might I say . We , too , are bound by the laws of physics . The Amazon experiences droughts due to deforestation in the Congo Basin . Every drop matters . Desde el vertido de los cadáveres de los protestantes masacrados en el siglo XVI hasta la contaminación masiva de las revoluciones industriales . París es una ciudad antigua que luchó con un sistema de alcantarillado que se remonta a siglos atrás , han adaptado con éxito esta infraestructura histórica para satisfacer las demandas modernas que planteaban un reto formidable .
París cuenta con un sistema de alcantarillado 100 % combinado , en el que el agua de lluvia y las aguas residuales fluyen por las mismas tuberías antes de ser tratadas . Incluso hoy en día , cuando llueve mucho , los desbordamientos combinados de aguas residuales ( CSO ) siguen vertiéndose al río . Sin embargo , el progreso brilla por su ausencia : en 2022 , más de 1,9 millones de metros cúbicos de aguas residuales se desbordaron en el Sena , sorprendentemente , un 90 % menos que hace dos décadas . El compromiso del presidente Macron con un río limpio para los próximos Juegos Olímpicos de París 2024 marca un punto de inflexión histórico .
